Successful Art Society Exhibition

Saturday 8th of June saw Woking town centre play host to some gloriously sunny weather and the first of two outdoor June exhibitions from the Woking Society of Arts. The following week, the society set up once more for the last time until September, demonstrating unquestionable talent for the whole town to see. It was a throng of good spirits on both occasions from the sprightly spectators passing through Mercia Walk and my fellow artists!

It was very pleasing and fulfilling to be part of an exhibition that set itself spaciously amongst the busy weekend shoppers, privileged by the pleasant summer air and of course, a multitude of talents! Prior to joining the society I had figured that the artistic standards would be high, yet it was a real eye opener to observe such incredible quality from varied types of art practice and mediums. There was something to learn and discover from each and every artist. David Deamer’s photorealistic oil landscapes of a local riverside certainly leave your eyes in disbelief. Three of his four on display were sold. His style is definitely one which I hope to emulate in the future.

Two captivating works by Julie Mardell stood out amongst her impressive selection of portraiture; humble portraits of African women. There is something strikingly captivating about their glare.

Elizabeth Carolan’s minimalist figuration appeared to be the most comfortable within the confinements of a frame. Her elephants took on an animated character, yet were technically very well crafted.

I think Kenneth Baker brought humour to the table with his cheeky illustrations of Noah’s Ark and London scenes. They are so well refined and neat that you find it difficult to actually appreciate just how technically fantastic they are. Very entertaining too.

Irrespective of experience or ability, all of the artists have something unique that make them stand out and more importantly, they demonstrate traits which are invaluable when it comes to learning from one another. Additionally, as society we were greatly satisfied with the enthusiasm from spectators as well as the high number of purchases made on both day – around 40+ paintings in total.

And of course this was only the June outdoor exhibition, there are still two more dates in the books for September's exhibitions. I am very much enjoying being a member of the Society and am happy that my own work received positive comments. I look forward to attending demonstrations and exhibitions throughout the year while gradually expanding on my ability, my knowledge and my practice.
